Attachments and Aversions

In the Gospel of Matthew, there’s a story about Jesus and a rich young man. In it, the young man asked Jesus what actions would grant him eternal life. Jesus advised the man to obey the Commandments. When the man replied that he already observed them, Jesus told him: “If you want to be perfect, go wll your possessions and give them to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

When the young man heard this, he became very upset. He was, after all, a man of great wealth; why should he give away everything that he had amassed? Jesus said, “Indeed it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

The barrier standing between the rich young man and Heaven wasn’t his wealth. Abundance is our birthright as divine beings. The barrier was his attachments to his wealth, and the fact that he placed more importance on riches in this dimension than on the connection to his God and eventual ascension.

You don’t have to believe in Heaven and Hell to see the merit in this cautionary tale. In order to connect with the infinite, divine spark within yourself, you need to get over your attachments, put down your baggage…and just lighten up.
